Vermont politician Rep. Mari Cordes has resigned and announced she is moving to Canada’s Nova Scotia to secure her retirement.

Rep. Cordes will resign from her position as a Vermont representative on July 4, 2025.

Her decision comes amid personal and professional challenges, including staffing shortages at Vermont hospitals that have reduced her work hours as a nurse.

As a queer senior and nurse working at the University of Vermont Medical Center, Cordes shared that watching colleagues leave for Canada influenced her choice.

Despite her role on the House Committee on Health Care, she feels compelled to leave the state at a difficult time for its health system.

The move involves her immediate resignation as a Vermont state representative. She communicated the decision publicly in early June, explaining it was not made lightly.
