South African, 30, Drowns In Vermont Lake

A man from South Africa drowned while swimming in Lake Champlain near the Basin Harbor Club on Tuesday night, Vermont State Police reported.

The man was identified as Darren Kemp, 30, who had been working at the club for the summer.

Emergency responders found Kemp underwater and took him to shore, but lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.

His body was sent to the state medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death, with no signs of suspicious circumstances reported.

Multiple local fire departments and rescue teams assisted state police at the scene, highlighting the coordinated emergency response to the incident.

The drowning involved a man swimming in Lake Champlain near the Basin Harbor Club. Emergency crews responded quickly but were unable to save him. His identity, timing, and the scene are central to understanding the events.

At approximately 9:25 p.m. on Tuesday, Vermont State Police received a report that a swimmer had gone underwater and not resurfaced. The man was last seen swimming offshore from the Basin Harbor Club.

Rescue teams arrived shortly after the call. They located the man in the water and brought him to shore.

Despite immediate lifesaving attempts, efforts failed. He was pronounced dead at roughly 10:10 p.m. by medical personnel on site.
