Sheriff In New Hampshire Goes To Jail For Theft & Perjury

A Sheriff in New Hampshire has been sent to prison for three years and six months for stealing $19,000 in county funds and lying under oath.

Mark Brave, the former Strafford County sheriff in New Hampshire, was sentenced Monday to three years and six in prison on perjury charges after being accused of stealing $19,000 in county funds.

Brave pleaded guilty to two counts of perjury, theft, and falsifying physical evidence after using a county credit card for improper expenses and lying about it to a grand jury.

Brave, the youngest and first Black sheriff in the state, was arrested in 2023 following an investigation into the misuse of county credit cards for fictitious business travel with romantic partners.

Initially, Brave cited political motivation, but later resigned in December 2023 and has since accepted responsibility for his actions.

According to Strafford County records, Brave was was elected sheriff in 2020 becoming the youngest sheriff in the county’s history at 39 and the first Black man to hold the position in New Hampshire.
