Public Library hosts another successful ‘StoryWalk® Plus’ in Downtown

Published on

The Children’s Room, at Rochester Public Library, recently partnered with the Rochester Main Street program to create a family-friendly activity called StoryWalk® Plus.

Participants moved throughout downtown, stopping at several designated locations to read a page from The Day Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt, illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. Participants were instructed to read the page and “collect words” held by hand-crafted crayon characters.

“The library started doing StoryWalk® programs during the pandemic shutdown. With the support of area organizations, we were able to present four at different locations around the city,” said Christina Paquette, Children’s Librarian. “Kids loved the activity and were asking when we would be doing another. It made just made sense to incorporate last year’s successful vacation event with a StoryWalk®. We added the word scramble and it became a StoryWalk® Plus.”

According to Paquette, each child that participated received a $5 gift card to JetPack Comics & Games. Participants were also entered to win additional prizes at random.

“The Children’s Room staff sends thanks to the downtown businesses and city departments that hosted book pages and donated prizes,” said Paquette. “We also want to thank the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce, Bernier Insurance Agency, Tri-City Bicycles, Town Square Barber, Jet Pack Comics & Games, Hervey’s Tire Company, Rochester Police Dept., Fallen Leaf Bistro, Collec-tiques, Sprinkles and Smiles, Skeletone Records, Riverstones Custom Framing, Postal Center USA, First Seacoast Bank, and Rochester City Hall for their respective participation.”
