A Rochester man is charged with the murder of his former romantic partner after a violent attack in rural Wabasha County.

Craig Hameister, 44, faces two counts of second-degree murder in the death of Melissa Hunt, 36, who suffered fatal injuries from the assault.

Hameister is being held on a $2 million bond after authorities found evidence linking him to the crime, including a live round in his truck and witness accounts of his behavior before the attack.

The incident began when deputies responded to a report of Hunt severely injured, leading to her death at a hospital hours later.

The investigation included a standoff after Hameister was found attempting to evade capture.

Details from the complaint describe a serious and urgent police response in the aftermath of the assault at a local boat launch and surrounding areas.
